It’s important to understand the differences between a coolroom vs freezer so that you make the right choice for your refrigeration installation.

What Is A Coolroom?

A coolroom is constructed from insulated panels and is designed to store perishable foods that need to be kept at a certain temperature.

What Is A Freezer Room?

Freezer rooms are also constructed from insulated panels but they run at a much lower temperature below freezing.

Coolroom vs Freezer: The Main Differences

Here are the main differences between coolrooms and freezers.

Temperature

While a coolroom usually operates at a temperature that is just above freezing, a freezer room has to have a much lower temperature so that the frozen food stored in it remains frozen.

Coolrooms operate within a temperature range of between 2 to 5 degrees Celsius. This allows you to store perishable food for extended periods.

On the other hand, freezers are set at a temperature of minus 18 degrees Celsius so that they can keep food frozen. This is similar to the temperature that domestic freezers are set at.

Health And Safety

To keep perishable foods at a safe temperature, coolrooms have accurate thermostats so that the correct temperature can be easily controlled.

On the other hand, freezer rooms must have a digital thermostat to ensure that a consistent freezing temperature is maintained.

It’s also important that these refrigeration units have security systems installed to keep the foods safe.

Storage Space

The amount of storage space available within both coolrooms and freezer rooms is quite similar. How much storage space is available will depend on the size and number of insulated panels that are used to construct the refrigeration unit.

Applications

The applications that these installations can be used for also vary greatly.

For example, a coolroom is usually used to store perishable items that are not frozen. These could include fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat and fish, bottled drinks and even flowers, cosmetics and medical supplies.

On the other hand, freezer rooms are only used to store frozen products such as fruits and vegetables, ice cream and frozen meals.

Which Should You Choose?

Whether you choose a coolroom or freezer for your business will depend on what type of perishable items you need to store. If the products only need to be kept cold but not frozen, then a coolroom is ideal.

However, if you plan to store frozen products for long periods, you’ll need a freezer room instead.
